SEO Basics

Thomas
I thought it would be a good idea to share a couple SEO strategies for those starting out or others who wouldn't mind having some information to check against what they are doing.

Content

One of the most recent and important parts of getting your site to rank in Google, as well as other search engines, is content. The new mantra is that content is king. The point is that without worthwhile content that offers what users are looking for, no one will want to visit your site. If they do get there you are probably looking at a high bounce rate. When first creating a site it is a good idea to setup a Google Webmasters account and request Google crawl your site. Keep content fresh and up to date, even small changes will help. If the Googlebot continuously crawls the site and does not see changes it will eventually do so less frequently.

Backlinks

Building backlinks is also important in getting more traffic, which in turn will increase your ranking. There are many methods to backlinking but I thought it appropriate to link to some articles that I feel cover some good backlinking strategies that offer ideas other than guest posting or blog promotion.

Here they are, let me know what you think:

Build Backlinks – 14 Easy Ways

In my opinion these are the two most important aspects of SEO, obviously the site you build needs to be mobile friendly if it is not a straight up mobile site but we've got you covered .

There has been an ongoing debate about whether Google prefers responsive design to a separate mobile site. I'm here to tell you that the discussion is moot as Google has stated that they don't care as long as you feel you are providing the best experience for your users.

There are of course other factors that are less prevalent after Google algorithm updates like keyword and meta tags. Make sure you are using h1 headers for important content and use alt tags for your images.

This is a very deep topic and I have hardly scratched the surface in this post so I'd love to hear what strategies you are using to get your sites ranked.
